Male breast reduction is an effective procedure to reduce and reshape the breasts in males who experience gynecomastia (a condition in males where the breasts are abnormally enlarged). The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidates are male adults whose gynaecomastia condition has persisted over time. Those who have realistic expectations about what male breast surgery can achieve. Those who smoke are asked to stop smoking two weeks before until two weeks after the surgery.
How is Male Breast Reduction done?
Male breast reduction is the removal of excess fat, surgically and through a liposuction procedure – reshaping the breasts to a more masculine appearance.
The procedure is done under local anaesthesia with light sedation. Light sedation is a type of anaesthesia that keeps the patient in a deep sleep and pain-free procedure. The recovery with light sedation is much faster compared to general anaesthesia. Therefore, light sedation can be done as an out-patient day surgery where patients can go home the same day.
How is the recovery period?
Our patients pretty well tolerate male breast reduction. You may start to feel slight discomfort a few hours after the surgery (when the local anaesthesia wears off) until two days. This discomfort may be on and off, make sure to take the pain relievers as prescribed.
What happens after the surgery?
After the surgery, a compression garment is worn on top of the dressings. These dressings will be changed when you come for follow-up.
What are the signs you need to look out?
Oozing of blood from the dressing is normal. However, profuse bleeding that persists even after interventions (putting pressure or placing ice pack) is a concern. Call the office and make an appointment to see the surgeon at the earliest.
Just like with any surgery, swelling is expected. Bruising, which can vary from person to person, is also expected.
Around one week after your surgery, you may feel hard lumps on the breasts. These lumps are nothing to worry about and eventually soften after a few sessions of Endermologie massage.
Will the gynaecomastia return?
Yes, it can happen. Patients need to avoid medications that may increase breast size. They also need to maintain a stable weight following the surgery.
