Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that is often performed to treat droopy eyelids and eyebags. It surgically removes the excess skin and fat, thus, achieving a more youthful appearance.
What causes droopy eyelids?
Various conditions can cause eyelids to droop, a condition known as ptosis. The most common cause is ageing. The skin around the eyes is more prone to looseness since it is naturally thinner than most skin structures on the body. As we reach past the age of 30, collagen production slows down. Collagen is naturally produced by the body and is responsible for skin elasticity. Collagen loss results in the gradual appearance of wrinkles and lines.
Although blepharoplasty is a common procedure done to restore a more youthful appearance, there are certain situations in which eyelid surgery is medically necessary. Time, as well as gravity, can add up to how droopy the eyelids can be. In some cases, the excess skin can physically obscure the field of vision. Through eyelid surgery, vision can be restored by the removal of the excess skin that drapes over the eyes.
The Blepharoplasty Experience
Blepharoplasty is carried out under sedation with local anaesthesia. Thus, patients undergoing this type of anaesthesia can go home the same day. Recovery with sedation is faster compared to general anaesthesia.
After the surgery, a small strip of dressing is applied on the incisions. Minimal oozing of blood may be evident until the first 24 hours. Intermittent application of ice pack and lying with the head elevated can decrease the risk of bleeding. If bleeding persists, the doctor should be informed.
Length of the Surgery
The surgery typically lasts from 1.5 to 2 hours. Patients need to recover a minimum of 2-3 hours at the clinic before they can go home.
