Breast Enlargement or Breast Augmentation is a surgical aesthetic surgery that enhances the size, shape and volume of the breasts through breast implants.
Breast implants have gained popularity during the 1960s in augmenting the breasts. Currently, there are different types of implants, but the most common is the cohesive silicone-gel implants which is also known as the “gummy bear” implants.
Cohesive gel implants have the advantage of retaining their form while providing natural breast shape, lessening the risk of rippling and providing a greater degree of safety in cases the implants lose its integrity. Unlike previous implants that “bleeds” out of the capsule when ruptured; cohesive gel implants retain inside the shell and does not circulate in the body.

The Procedure and The Recovery
Breast augmentation surgery is relatively short – around 1.5 to 2 hours at most. The surgery is carried out as a day procedure under sedation. Patients under sedation recover a minimum of a couple of hours at the clinic and are able to go home the same day. Patients are advised to have someone pick them up at the clinic and stay with them for the next couple of days.
A bandage is wrapped around the breasts and is removed after three to four days. Once the bandage is removed, a support bra is worn for another 3 weeks. During this time, the breasts are somehow looking pointy and up. However, once the swelling has gone down, the breasts will gradually take its natural form and will settle down.
Also, caring for the breasts during the first month is critical. Avoid lifting heavy objects and stretching your arms higher than your shoulder length to minimise trauma to the stitches.
Follow-up Appointments
During the first month, you will be asked to come regularly at the clinic. Stitches are removed after the second week. You will be asked to come back on the first, second and third month following your surgery to see your progress.
