Dr Roberto Viel, plastic surgeon at the London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery London & Dubai, takes time out to answer some of your plastic surgery questions.
Q: I lost a lot of weight around my belly after pregnancy and now my skin is saggy, is there anything out there to help?
A: Pregnancy causes the stretching of the abdominal muscles and skin, and in some cases the elasticity is lost creating sagging skin. A mini-tummy tuck or a full tummy tuck may be recommended to resolve the skin sagging. A mini tummy tuck will involve an incision below the bikini line, and the excess skin is removed. Alternatively, if there is too much skin and weak abdominal muscles a full abdominalplasty surgery may be advised. This involves the cutting of the excess skin, as well as the tightening of the abdominal wall muscles with a permanent scar from one hip to the other hip, and in some cases the repositioning of the belly button.
Q: I’d like to get liposuction, but I’m afraid of the procedure, is there anything out there that’s less invasive but efficient?
A: Many have tried diet and exercise and non-invasive machines with little or no permanent results for target weight loss areas such as the ‘muffin top area’ and ‘saddlebags’. Liposuction still remains one of the most effective methods to contour the body especially for stubborn areas such as the outer, inner thighs, abdomen and back. Even when we diet and exercise, we cannot guarantee that the fat will be lost from the areas that we want to lose them from. After 30, the body will usually extract fat from the face and the breasts first rather than the lower half of the body. For liposuction, the VASER liposuction technique is safe, effective and an accurate for fat removal with a quicker recovery time and less bruising compared to traditional methods but make sure you visit an experienced surgeon.
