Otoplasty is a reconstructive ear surgery to correct a defect in the ear structure – shape, position or proportion.
Prominent or protruding ears are generally because of a defect in the cartilage of the ear. Genetics also plays a large role for this type of case. Usually, people who have protruding ears have others in their family as well.
At London Centre for Aesthetic Surgery Gulf, Italian plastic surgeons, Drs Maurizio and Roberto Viel perform otoplasty under intravenous sedation. This is a day case procedure that is conducted in our Dubai Healthcare City based clinic.
The procedure is generally designed to bring the ears closer to the head. The surgeon will make a cut just behind the ear in the neutral fold where the ear meets the head. Through the incision, the excess cartilage is removed and natural folds are created and the initial cut stitched up. Bandages and dressings are then applied to the ears to protect the area. The procedure takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The patient will stay for 2 to 3 hours in the clinic to recover and will be discharged on the same day.
While the stitches heal, the patient may feel that his ears are pulling or feel tight.
The patient can go back to work within 5 to 7 days post surgery and can do exercise after 2 weeks.
