Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is the surgical removal of skin and sometimes fat on the upper and lower eyelids to address droopy eyelids and eye bags. Eyelid surgery has received highly satisfactory results from both surgeons and doctors.
The surgery is carried out as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia with sedation. You will be able to return home on the same day of the surgery.
Preparations before the surgery are necessary as with all cosmetic surgery. Firstly, a consultation with the surgeon is required to determine the specific goal and need of the patient. After the consultation, a pre-anaesthesia consultation will be conducted. Blood tests are also necessary to rule out any medical problem that can impede the flow of the surgery and the recovery period. Once everything is in order, the patient can now proceed in scheduling for the surgery.
On the day of the operation, fasting is a must from midnight. The length of the surgery typically lasts around one to one and a half hour.
After the surgery, tiny dressings will be placed on the surgical wound to aid in closure. Minimal bruises and swelling are expected for the first couple of weeks. Also, intermittent ice pack application is recommended for the first day to reduce swelling and bleeding. Oozing of blood is not uncommon for the first day. However, it is best to return immediately for a follow-up with the surgeon should any prolonged bleeding persist.
The stitches are removed after four or five days and a small dressing is applied. This dressing can then be removed after a day.
